VASUDEV.S.G

S.G. Vasudev [1941] is an artist who in his individuated free-floating imagery defines his subject matter rooted in the social and cultural matrix. Vasudev works in various mediums (drawings, paintings and reliefs in copper). He became well-known for his “Vriksha” (Tree of Life) series, which evolved over nearly a decade, turning into the Tree of Life and Death in the latter half of the 1980s. He also explored the theme of “Maithuna” (Act of Love) through a series of drawings paintings and copper reliefs. Eventually his tree grew, into faces titled “Humanscapes” and .
“Earthscapes”. The tree is still sometimes visible in his series titled “Theatre of Life.”, “He” and “She”. Vasudev in his artistic statements was inspired by literary authors as A.K. Ramanujam and D.S. Bendre the Kannada authors whose verbal metaphors were translated into the visual ones. Vasudev sensitively has interfaced with society offering themes and subjects which juxtaposed with his technique and artistic vocabulary makes his approach perceptual and empirical. He is one artist whose technique remains a hall mark of his style. Tirelessly he continues to experiment, which manifests his restless energy. The painted canvases maintain the refined negotiation of line and decorative patterning, signifying his continuous engagement to his past. It is not purely the formal elements of line, colour and space that he indulges with such sophistication but equally intriguing are his varied themes that operate as metaphors and tropes powerfully undergirding his works
