M. Suriyamoorthi’s [1944] canvases vibrate with animated and pulsating energy. His imagery and brilliant chromas translate to manifest aural and visual states for the viewer. His works represent both iconic deities as Ganesha et al as well the local domestic interiors or street scenes. The visual drama is foregrounded with woman as the dominant protagonist performing multiple roles. His female imagery has been reduced to caricatures, parodying the aggression to create subtle humour in his compositions. His methodology of formatting his compositions is premised on a series
of vignettes which are boxed in and run along the perimeter of his canavas; with the central part of the composition given over to the main protagonist, which could be dominant male or female imagery. Or he places the main protagonist in the lower bottom and the rest of the space boxed to reflect the vignettes of life. His oeuvre has decorative strength, virile brush strokes, raw energetic colours and versatile female forms earthy and fecund. His canvases are also inscribed with English scripts reflecting on the tradition of the Madras Art Movement.
