SUHAS BAHULKAR

Suhas Bahulkar [1954] works are figurative foregrounding nostalgia and memory. His works journey in time, reflecting on traditions that have progressively dissolved in the face of cutting edge technology; through ruminations that has kept it alive in visual arts. The spatial complexity of his works lucidly translates these sentiments and feelings, with his forms and objects metaphorically creating a palimpsest with overlapping and fragmentation. Suhas approaches the lost traditions of havelis, pictorial and sartorial traditions with a sense of artistic responsibility, his approach and
attitude translating to an activist. Says Suhas, “The remnants of the traditional lifestyle of my youth stir my memories; and I am transported into this bygone era.” He works with acrylic, oil and watercolours, and has also experimented with paper, canvas and wood. The subdued and toned colour palette allows him to sublimate timeworn, weathered look in his paintings in order to convey an effect of time and age.
