G. SUBRAMANIAN

G. SUBRAMANIAN [1952] Subramanian in his collaged mixed media brings to it a keen insight about life, reflected in his incisive study of human form. Premising his works on skilled and structured drawing he evokes varied emotional responses to his works. His collages interestingly combine materials on canvas creating notions of contemporary Radhas’ and Krishnas’ in a naïve and simplified manner or iconic deities as Ganesha in various postures. It also has a popular appeal with their kitsch colours and mass manufactured materials that he employs with aplomb. His current series of collages
are constructed from printed images and texts sourced from popular magazines. The icons are puppet like and characterized by child like naiveté and inscribed with subtle wit and humour. The abstract and complex imagery have an enduring appeal derived from its simplicity. His iconic imagery of Ganesha, Hanuman and Krishna are layered with metroscape vignettes.
