SOMENATH MAITY

Somnath Maity [1960] works are an abstraction of the spirit of his urban environment and culture. He fragments and fractures his architectural structures in the tradition of Cubists and futurists but not to enrich the surface with dimensionality of space and time; rather to evoke the inner beauty existent in a structure whether architecture or otherwise. There is a linear feel to his works artistically juxtaposed with misty envelope of soft chiaroscuro backgrounds, creating differences and polarities that allow the structures of his architecture to be revealed. In articulating
architecture through a cubist visual language, it also implicates a philosophy of ‘maya’ or illusion that appears is not what actually is but there is a deeper reality beyond, which for Maity translates as inner beauty. His evocative colours as blue or green reinforces this poetic philosophy.
