SOLANKI. V

Vrindavan. Solanki [1947] His engagement with monochrome technique simulating wash effects has resonance of Indian and Chinese traditions. Strikingly powerful in Solanki’s works are his lines and graduated tones of grey that evoke and establish his imagery. Locating his human imagery within his regional roots, especially the Rabari tribe who were regulars at his home in Gujarat; Solanki recreates an authentic aura through their sartorial attire and intricate surface designs. Reinforced further by his technique; reminiscent of Leonardo’s sfumato, creating a hazy
and smoky ambience, it enables him to foregrounds the saliency of local folks. The enigmatic tonal contrasts allow for the effulgent light that creates a magical space drawing the viewer into his works. The gestalting faces indicated by the mere suggestion of line is perhaps reflective of the dense demography of his region of Gujarat inspiring him to paint them as faceless.
