Sanjay Kumar’s [1961] concerns are centered on the fragility of human relationships, a sensitive subject that he explores through an expressionist language. The fragmented imagery, sfumato hazy technique with virulent colours contributes to a provocative ambience yet with significant silence. The exaggerated figures and equally pungent colours heighten the emotional effect. His compositions have a dream like reality melding with his concepts that make them earth bound and simultaneously uplifts them into another realm. A raw primitive vigour marks his fecund vision. |
Kumar's compositions creates a surrealist ambience effected mainly through the unnerving juxtapositions of human figures with inanimate objects. The figures in his paintings throb with vigour, appearing to be twisting and turning restlessly barely contained in their space. This is further heightened by gestures rather than facial expressions, which are obscured in the enigmatic dark tonal contrasts. The luminous hues that accentuate the energy of the painting are complemented by rustic wooden frames, which form an integral part of the work. |
