ARPANA CAUR

Arpana Caur [1954] belongs to the league of artists post Independence, whose contribution towards modern Indian art is seminal. Inspired by her mother’s writings, Punjab folk traditions and bhakti philosophy, she has developed a visual language that is strongly figurative with a surreal ambience. Her conceptual approach foregrounds the philosophy of life with the transitory soul. As a contemporary artist, in her creative endeavours, she has opened up space within the art practice to allow her cultural roots to be privileged by reinterpreting it within the context of
postmodernity. Her themes gesture towards social issues, at the heart of which is the woman. Her narrative foregrounds the economic disparity and the social asymmetry sensitively observed by her; communicated through the tool of graffiti, assigning strength and power. Caur’s subjectivity is grounded to reflect in her oeuvre, dominantly strategized to convey the depth of her emotions and sensitivity to society.
