AMIT AMBALAL

Amit Ambalal [1943] works are either modernist in their appeal translated through popular religious traditions or are based on the Rajasthani Nathdwara devotional paintings which he has been practicing for more than fifteen years. In this exhibition, the work is expressionist with slapdash brush strokes and strong resonant colours as blue, pink, grey and swishes of black. His representations of the animal has human like quality as this image of a desperate cow warding off flies with its tail the only weapon available. Yet undergirding his works is a subtle play of humour evidenced in the eyes of the animal. Says Amit, “"I don't decide what to paint before
hand, the initial idea may be from a newspaper photograph I have seen in the morning or an antique sculpture. Then as I am painting something starts to grow inside that canvas, and that takes on the final form on the canvas."
